7) CONGREVE’S ROCKET FACTORY

In the early 1800s William Congreve set up a military rocket factory on the 14-acre site, which later became Bromley-by-Bow gasworks. 

Congreve’s rockets, based on an Indian design from Mysore, were used in the Napoleonic Wars and against the Americans when the British attacked Fort McHenry near Baltimore in 1814. Their power is mentioned in the US national anthem.
